• S-Frame = Supervisory frame; one of three SDLC frame formats; zie ook SDLC
• S-PVA = Super Patterned Vertical Alignment; techniek bij LCD voor grotere kijkhoek; zie ook PVA
• S-Spline = algoritme om afbeeldingen te vergroten; zeer goed
• S/P DIF = Sony/Pgilips Digital Interface; standaardaansluiting om geluidsinformatie van het ene apparaat naar het andere over te brengen zonder analoog-naar-digitaal of omgekeerd te converteren
• S/WIM = Subscriber Wireless Identity Module, module bij GPRS waarin digitaal certificaat (digitale handtekening) wordt opgeslagen; zie ook WPKI
• SAA = System Application Architecture, systeem van IBM voor integratie pc's met minicomputers en mainframes
• SAC = Single Attached Concentrator; FDDI or CDDI concentrator that connects to the network by being cascaded from the master port of another FDDI or CDDI concentrator
• SAC = Simple API for CSS; standard package of interfaces for parsing and applying CSS
• SACD = Super Audio CD, audio cd opgenomen met DSD, ontwikkeld door Sony; zie ook CD-DA, DSD, DST
• SADL = Structural Architecture Description Language
• SafeAudio = Audio CD protection developed by Macrovision, that protects a cd from ripping by disturbing the error correction codes
• SAM = Security Accounts Manager van Windows NT, often referred to as the directory database
• SAM = Sequential Access Method, methode waarbij een bestand regel voor regel wordt gelezen en geschreven, b.v. op tape
• SAN = Storage Area Network, systeem bestaande uit veel harddisks en een intelligente controller, doorgaans via speciale snelle verbinding verbonden met server, b.v. Exchange Server
• SANE = Standard Apple Numeric Environment, rekeneenheid in Macintosh-computer
• SAO = Session At Once, techniek bij cd-recorders
• SAP = Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung, administratief programma oorspronkelijk van ibm
• SAP = Service Access Point; field defined by the IEEE 802.2 specification that is part of an address specification; thus, the destination plus the DSAP define the recipient of a packet; the same applies to the SSAP; zie ook SSAP
• SAP = Service Advertising Protocol; IPX protocol that provides a means of informing network clients, via routers and servers, of available network resources and services; zie ook IPX
• SAP = Secure Audio Path; beveiliging tegen kopiëren van audio in Windows ME en XP; zie ook DRM
• SAPI = Speech Application Programmers Interface, API voor spraaktoepassingen, onderdeel van VisualStudio.Net
• SAPI = Server Application Programming Interface
• SAR = Segmentation And Reassembly; one of the two sublayers of the AAL CPCS, responsible for dividing (at the source) and reassembling (at the destination) the PDUs passed from the CS; zie ook AAL, CPCS
• SARG = Search ARGument
• SAS = Single Attachment Station; device attached only to the primary ring of an FDDI ring. Also known as a Class B station. Compare with DAS; zie ook DAS
• SAS = Statically Assigned Socket; socket that is permanently reserved for use by a designated process; in an AppleTalk network, SASs are numbered 1 to 127; they are reserved for use by specific socket clients and for low-level built-in network services
• SAS = Serial Attached SCSI, opvolger SCSI; zie ook SCSI
• SASL = Simple Authentication and Security Layer,(RFC4422), method for adding authentication support to connection-based protocols, wordt gebruikt bij SMTP
• Sata II, Sata-2 = set uitbreidingen op Sata; o.a. dynamische rotatiesnelheid van de schijf en NCQ voor hogere performance bij multithreading; snelheid 3 Gbit/s; zie ook Sata
• SATA, Serial ATA = seriële versie van ATA, werkt met 7-aderige kabel, snelheid 1 Gbit/s (vergelijkbaar met UDMA/100); zie ook ATA
• Satan = Security Administrator Tool for Analyzing Networks; tool voor het onderzoeken van zwakke plekken in een netwerk
• Saturation = Saturation describes the hue's purity. A color with a saturation of 100% is bright and vivid, and a color with a saturation of 0% is a shade of grey.
• Save under = X-server onthoudt vensterinhoud als venster door ander venster overlapt wordt
• SAWSDL = Semantic Annotations for WSDL; zie ook WSDL
• SAX = Simple API for XML, event-based API specification; zie ook DOM
• SBA = Scene Balance Algorithm, algoritme om o.a. automatisch de kleurbalans van photo-cd-afbeeldingen aan te passen
• SBC = Single Board Computer, computersysteem op 1 printplaat, b.v. voor regelsysteem
• SBM = Subnet Bandwidth Manager; standard for handling resource reservations on shared and switched IEEE 802-style local-area media
• SBR = Spectral Band Replication; techniek om geluid met hogere frequenties efficiënt te decoderen; wordt gebruikt in MP3Pro
• SBus = standaard voor systeembus tussen processor en I/O; wordt o.a. gebruikt in Sun SPARC-based workstations
• Scatternet = netwerk van bluetooth-netwerken, waarbij master van ene piconet slave is van ander piconet; zie ook piconet
• SCC = Serial Communications Controller, schakeling voor seriële communicatie
• SCCP = Signaling Connection Control Part; Trillium software that supports routing and translation and management functions and data transfer without logical signaling connections; zie http://www.cisco.com
• Schema = describes how a structured data file (database) is built
• SCI = Serial Communication Interface
• SCL = Spam Confidence Level, code die de waarschijnlijkheid van spam aangeeft (1=geen 10=wel); zie ook spam
• SCL = Scanner Control Language, van HP
• SCM = Service Control Manager van Windows NT
• SCM = Supply Chain Management, beheer van toeleveringsketens
• SCM = Secure Content Manager; programma dat inhoud van websites, email etc. controleert op spam, virussen etc.
• SCMS = Serial Copy Management System, systeem voor kopieerbeveiliging; wordt gebruikt op memory-stick
• SCP = Secure Cryptographic Processor; chip t.b.v. encryptie
• SCP = Service Control Point; element of an SS7-based Intelligent Network which performs various service functions, such as number translation, call setup and teardown, etc.
• SCR = Sustainable Cell Rate; parameter defined by the ATM Forum for ATM traffic management. For VBR connections, SCR determines the long-term average cell rate that can be transmitted.; zie ook VBR
• SCR = System Clock Reference, tijdcode bij DVD
• Script X = multimedia scripttaal voor PC's, Mac, Unix
• Scriptlet = overlaid pages that remain a separate entity from the main HTML document; zelfstandige component, geschreven in DHTML, complement van Behavior
• SCSI = Small Computer System Interface; aansluiting voor meerdere apparaten (harddisk, e.d) op een computer; zie ook Fast, SCSI, Wide
• SCTE = Serial Clock Transmit External; timing signal that DTE echoes to DCE to maintain clocking; designed to compensate for clock phase shift on long cables
• SD = Send Data, indicator op modem wanneer data wordt verzonden; zie ook RD
• SD Card, SD-Card = Secure Digital geheugenkaart, met SDMI beveiligde MulitMediaCard; zie ook micro, SD, SDHC
• SDC = Selected Device Clear, signaal bij IEEE488
• SDF = System Data Format, formaat voor opslag van data: strings are separated by commas or spaces, and optionally enclosed in double quotes (Borland)
• SDH = Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, Europese standaard voor hoge snelheids netwerk; snelheid 155.52 Mbps
• SDHC card = Secure Digital Gigh Capacity; standaard voor SD-geheugenkaarten groter dan 2 GB; werkt met FAT32; zie ook SD
• SDI = Single Document Interface, Windows-applicatie met 1 venster; zie ook MDI
• SDLC = Synchronous Data Link Control; SNA data link layer communications protocol; bit-oriented, full-duplex serial protocol that has spawned numerous similar protocols, including HDLC and LAPB; zie ook SNA, HDLC, LAPB
• SDLT, SuperDLT = Super Digital Linear Tape; variant of DLT technology that makes it possible to store upwards of 100 GB on a single cartridge and can transfer data at speeds of up to 10 megabytes per second; zie ook DLT
• SDM = System Development Method, methode en technieken voor de ontwikkeling van informatiesystemen
• SDMA = Spatial Division Multiple Access, a complement (not an alternative) to CDMA and TDMA, this technology increases the number of users that can access an existing wireless phone or data system by exploiting the spatial characteristics of the channel itself through highly developed implementation of an intelligent antenna system's capabilities for receiving and transmitting; zie ook CDMA
• SDMI = Secure Digital Music Initiative, codeertechniek voor MP3
• SDOM = Scheme implementation of DOM; zie ook DOM
• SDR = Single Data Rate, alle geheugen die nog geen DDR is; zie ook DDR
• SDRAM = Synchronous Dynamic RAM, gesynchronyseerd met de systeemklok, sneller dan DRAM; zie ook SGRAM
• SDSL = Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line: HDSL plus POTS over a single telephone line. This name has not been adopted by a standards group, but is being discussed by ETSI
• SDSL = Single-Line Digital Subscriber Line: one of four DSL technologies; delivers1.544 Mbps both downstream and upstream over a single copper twisted pair (max 3 km); zie ook DSL
• SDSU = SMDS DSU; DSU for access to SMDS via HSSIs and other serial interfaces
• SDTV = Standard Definition; gewoon tv-signaal, t.o.v. HDTV; zie ook HDTV
• SDU = Service Data Unit; unit of information from an upper-layer protocol that defines a service request to a lower-layer protocol
• SE = Storage Engine
• SEAL = Simple and Efficient AAL. Scheme used by AAL5 in which the SAR sublayer segments CS PDUs without adding additional fields; zie ook AAL
• SEC = Single Edge Contact; printplaatje waarbij alle aansluitingen aan een kant zitten, bedoeld voor hoogfrequente signalen
• SECC = Single Edge Contact Catridge, aanduiding voor processor-aansluiting waarbij de contacten aan een kant zitten; zie ook SEC, PGA, SEPP
• Sector = deel van een track op een opslagmedium; een harddisk is onderverdeeld in tracks die is onderverdeeld in sectoren
• Secure MP3 = codeertechniek voor MP3
• SED = Surface-conduction Electron-emitting Display; techniek voor platte beeldschermen met hoger contrast en snellere responstijd dan LCD; vergelijkbaar met FED; zie ook TFT, FED
• Self refresh = type geheugen die zichzelf ververst en geen refresh signaal nodig heeft zoals standaard geheugen
• Semaphore = signaal dat een thread doorgeeft aan een andere thread
• SEO = Search Engine Optimisation; aanduiding voor een methode om zoekranking te verhogen
• SEPP = Single Edge Processor Package; processor-behuizing voor Intel Celeron met Slot1-aansluiting; zie ook PPGA
• SERCnet = Science Engineering Research Council Network, vroeger netwerk tussen Britse universiteiten, in 1977 vervangen door JAnet; zie ook JAnet
• Serendipiteit = de gave om door puur toeval heerlijke ontdekkingen te kunnen doen
• Serial AGP, Serieel AGP = seriële versie van AGP; zie ook AGP
• Seriele poort = aansluiting waarbij data via een signaal achter elkaar wordt verzonden; trager dan parallel maar minder kabel nodig
• Server Push = server sends new parts of page to the client, using a multipart MIME type called "multipart/x-mixed-replace"; zie ook client, pull
• SET = Secure Exchange Transaction, protocol voor veilige on-line transacties
• SF = Super Frame; common framing type used on T1 circuits; consists of 12 frames of 192 bits each, with the 193rd bit providing error checking and other functions; superseded by ESF, but is still widely used; also called D4 framing; zie ook ESF
• SFA = Sales Force Automation, automatisering van het verkooptraject
• SFC = System File Checker, taak van Windows 2000 die systeembestanden controleert bij opstarten
• SFF = Small Form Factor, aanduiding voor pc-kast met veel kleinere afmetingen dan mini-tower
• SFF = Structured Fax File
• SFM = Services For Macintosh, biedt Macintoshes toegang op een NTFS volume
• SFT = System Fault Tolerance, systeem voor het minimaliseren van gegevensverlies

• SG = Storage Group
• SGCP = Simple Gateway Control Protocol; controls Voice over IP gateways by an external call control element (called a call-agent); this has been adapted to allow SGCP to control switch ATM Circuit Emulation Service circuits
• SGMP = Simple Gateway Monitoring Protocol; network management protocol that was considered for Internet standardization and later evolved into SNMP; zie ook SNMP
• SGRAM = Synchronous Graphics RAM, vergelijkbaar met SDRAM, met extra blok-lees/schrijf-functies voor snellere beeldverwerking
• SHA = Secure Hash Algorithm, algoritme voor beveiliging van gegevens
• Shareware = software die vrij verspreid en uitgetest mag worden en pas bij gebruik betaald moet worden
• SHorteN, muziekformaat (audio codec) , lossless compression
• SHS = extensie voor Windows Scrapbookobject; let op: er zijn virussen die hier gebruik van maken
• SHTML = Smart HTML, internet scripttaal, voegt extra commando's toe aan HTML; zie ook HTML
• SHTTP = Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol, protocol voor beveiliging van WWW op Internet; a higher level protocol that only works with the HTTP protocol, but is potentially more extensible than SSL; zie ook SSL
• SID = Service ID: a number that defines (at the MAC sublayer) a particular mapping between a cable modem (CM) and the CMTS
• SIF = Setup Instruction File, extensie voor bestand met instructies om automatisch een setup uit te voeren, ook genoemd Answer File
• Silverlight = runtime voor RIA; v/h WPF/E; werkt als een plugin voor browsers die javascript uitbreidt met vele functies voor multimedia en web-based toepassingen; werkt met XAML; zie ook XAML
• SIM = Subscriber Identity Module, chipcard met uniek nummer in mobiele telefoon

• SMIL = Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language, uitbreiding op HTML voor grafische effecten, en tijd-afhankelijke elementen

• SMMS = Siemens Corporate Research Multimedia Mail System, systeem om video, afbeeldingen, geluid, grafieken, teksten etc aan E-mail te koppelen
• SMO = state machine object
• SMP = Symmetric Multiprocessing, computersysteem met meer processoren die gelijktijdig taken uitvoeren
• SMRP = Simple Multicast Routing Protocol. Specialized multicast network protocol for routing multimedia data streams on enterprise networks; works in conjunction with multicast extensions to the AppleTalk protocol
• SMS = Systems Management Server; product voor beheer software en updates in een netwerk
• SMS = Short Message Service
• SMT = Station Management, standaard voor station insertion/removal voor FDDI
• SMT = System Management Terminal
• SMT = Simultanous MultiThreading, andere benaming voor Hyper-threading; zie ook Hyperthreading
• SMT = Statistical Machine Translation; techniek voor automatisch vertalen waarbij eerdere vertalingen worden gebruikt om mbv waarschijnlijkheidsberekeningen te vertalen; zie ook RBMT
• SMTP = Single Mail Transport Protocol, standaardmanier om e-mail te verzenden over internet
• SN = Sequence Number, veld bij ATM; zie ook ATM
• SNA = System Network Architecture, netwerk-architectuur van IBM

• SNMP = Simple Network Management Protocol, provides a way to monitor and control network devices and to manage configurations, used in TCP/IP networks

• SNP = Sequence Number Protection

• Spyware = common language for Advertising Supported software (Adware): 1. Banner ads, software publishers add a banner into their software and get paid for that; 2. • SQE = Signal Quality Error. Transmission sent by a transceiver back to the controller to let the controller know whether the collision circuitry is functional. Also called heartbeat

• SRB = Source-Route Bridging, method of bridging originated by IBM and popular in Token Ring networks, in an SRB network, the entire route to a destination is predetermined, in real time, prior to the sending of data to the destination, contrast with transparent bridging

• SRQ = Service ReQuest, signaal bij IEEE488
• SRT = Source-Route Transparent; IBM bridging scheme that merges the two most prevalent bridging strategies: SRB and transparent bridging. SRT employs both technologies in one device to satisfy the needs of all ENs. No translation between bridging protocols is necessary. Compare with SR/TLB
• SRTP = Sequenced Routing Update Protocol. Protocol that assists VINES servers in finding neighboring clients, servers, and routers. See also RTP

• Streaming = the process of sending media over a network for listening/viewing in real time
